BIOGRAPHY
On September 22, 2008, P. A. Mack was presented the Henry R. Besch, Jr. Promotion of Excellence Award and Honorary Membership in the Alliance. The following statement was made by Alliance Co-Chair David J. Malik in recognition of his contributions:
"The Honorable Pierpont Askren Mack, Jr. has been a substantive and loyal supporter of Indiana University: Bloomington, Indianapolis, and all the campuses of IU. His name is recognized widely on all campuses.
Since his days as Chief of Staff for US Senator Birch Bayh, his dedication to public service has been evident and recognized by both Presidents Carter and Reagan. He, in fact, had posts in both of their administrations.
Back home in Indiana, Mack served as an Indiana University Trustee and is a Life Member of the IUF Board of Directors. He was a member and former chairman of the Indiana Commission on Higher Education. A distinguished alumnus, he earned an MBA at IU and received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from IU South Bend.
Reflecting his deep personal commitment to education and philanthropy, Mack was the first chairman of the Center on Philanthropy's Governing Board and has offered invaluable advice and support throughout the Center's history. In 2007, Mack established a fellowship to assist students pursuing doctoral degrees at the Center on Philanthropy.
In 1999, the Faculty Colloquium on Excellence in Teaching, FACET, initiated the P.A. Mack Award for Distinguished Service to Teaching, of which he was the first recipient. In 2003, P.A. endowed the formation of the Mack Center for Inquiry in Teaching and Learning, in conjunction with FACET. Moreover, P.A. has been a regular contributor at FACET retreats and special pedagogy programs and has offered many perceptive and valuable insights into the role of teaching and its scholarship in our faculty work.
P.A.’s vision is an IU where inquiry, scholarship, and learning flourish and IU is the institution of choice. Recognizing the role of philanthropy in education, and quoting Gene Tempel, IU Foundation President, 'P.A. has been a great friend to IU for many years and has served it and our nation with distinction… He is a steadfast advocate for … building the field of Philanthropic Studies, and his generosity will allow us to engage the best and brightest scholars well into the future'."
