Charles played football from 1934-35 and 1937. He also wrestled between 1935-38, was captain in 1938, and was wrestling coach from 1946-71. Charles was a two time NCAA heavyweight champion and a member of the 1936 Olympic team. He is a member of the Wrestling Hall of Fame.
