Gilbert won diving letters in 1963, 1964 and 1965. He won both the one- and three-meter Big Ten titles in both 1964 and 1965 and won NCAA one-meter championship in 1964. He won four NAAU indoor diving championships and two NAAU outdoor titles, won both the three-meter and ten-meter titles at the World University Games in Budapest in 1965, won six NCAA All-American honors and four NAAU All-American honors. He was a member of 1968 U.S. Olympic team in platform diving. Gilbert was Eastern Conference Swimming League Women's Diving Coach of the Year 1991-93 and Men's Diving Coach of the Year 1986. Gilbert is diving coach at Cornell University from 1968 to present.
