BIOGRAPHY
John Emmert Stempel was born with an allegiance to Indiana University through his faculty parents, and actively advanced its interest throughout his markedly effective academic career. As founder, and for thirty years chairman, of the Journalism department, he built an educational program for prospective journalists that was so sound, he won respectful admiration from academicians and professionals alike in the field.

The professional success and personal testimonies of his students are a tribute to Stempel's judgement, teaching, standards and practical precepts. He was also an exemplary citizen as well, and held numerous offices of civic responsibility and stature in service clubs. Professional organizations elected him to their top national posts and recognized his contributions with awards.
