Joseph Francis Volker's philosophy was to arm every dental practitioner with broader, more scientific knowledge of diagnosis and treatment; throughout his career he pursued with expertise the tireless quest of challenging students, stimulating their thought processes and leading them to the height of their ability and performance.

Dr. Volker served in the top administrative level of his profession at two leading colleges before ultimately becoming the vice president of a distinguished southern university and the directorship of its medical center. He was internationally known for his pioneering research in the biochemical bases of tooth decay and the uses of fluoride in it its prevention.

Indiana University acknowledged this distinguished alum with a Distinguished Alumni Service Award and an honorary degree. Dr. Volker's contributions to the advancement of dentistry received international recognition as well, including honorary degrees from the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the University of Medical Sciences of Thailand.
