Trash and Recycling

The city provides curbside trash, yard waste, and recycling pickup for single family households. If you live in a rental house or some apartment buildings (contact your property manager to verify), you should familiarize yourself with the city's collection schedule and policies.

Trash

Trash is collected once a week. Call the Sanitation Department at (812) 349-3443 for your scheduled collection day. Trash stickers may be purchased for $2 each at all Marsh and Kroger locations and other select vendors. For a complete list of vendors, visit Bloomington Sanitation Department. Please place trash containers on the curb the night before pickup. Containers must be removed from the curb on the same day of pickup. If you do not remove your containers on the same day, you may be fined up to $15. Each day a violation continues is considered a separate violation.

Yard Waste

If you are responsible for maintaining your own yard, it's important to note the city's policy on yard waste removal. Yard waste is collected weekly on your regular trash day from March through January. Stickers may be purchased for $1 each at all trash sticker vendors. Paper yard waste bags are available for purchase at many trash and yard waste sticker vendors.

Recycling

Every other week, on your regular trash day, recycling service is provided free of charge to recipients of city trash pickup. Recyclables should be sorted into two categories:

  • Paper products
  • Metal cans, glass containers, and plastic bottles.
