Mathematica for Students

As of July 2004 after negotiations between Indiana University and Wolfram Research, Inc., Mathematica is now available to students of Indiana University for home use. The software may be installed under Windows, Macintosh, or Linux Systems. This is an annual license; it expires in July of the following year. Any currently enrolled Indiana University student may purchase this software. Faculty and staff are not eligible for this program, but may contact the Stat/Math Center for other license programs.

This license significantly reduces the overall costs for students of using one of the premier computer algebra systems. We look forward to students having access to the power of Mathematica at a reasonable price.

What are the differences between the student and professional versions of Mathematica?

In broad terms the programs are the same. There are, however, a few differences:

  • Mathematica for Students is for exclusive sale to students enrolled at accredited academic institutions for use on their own personal computers. Proof of enrollment is required at the time of purchase.
  • Registration and a password are required to use Mathematica for Students. To register Mathematica for Students and to receive an activation password, students must go to the Wolfram Research product registration page or contact Wolfram Research via phone, email, fax, or postal mail.
  • Mathematica for Students includes The Mathematica Book as an electronic version in the online documentation found under the Help Browser. The professional version of Mathematica contains a hard copy of this book in addition to the online documentation. A printed edition of the book is available from the Mathematica bookstore.
  • Mathematica for Students has an encoded footnote that prints at the bottom of every document page. This "Printed by Mathematica for Students" footnote cannot be eliminated.

Please contact the Stat/Math Center for inquiries about special arrangements such as networked licenses departments making large volume purchases.

Who is eligible?

Any current enrolled students at any of the eight branches of Indiana University can purchase a copy of Mathematica for Students. You must provide proof of your student status at the time of purchase.

How much is the software?
