The Program
Internship
You will intern four full days each week in a variety of interesting and challenging
assignments, all unpaid. As an intern, you will be expected to work as an entry-level
professional, completing substantive and independent assignments.
Courses
Your courses will be taught by a SPEA faculty member and will be supplemented with lectures
by Washington policymakers and officials. The SPEA faculty member will be available for course
office hours and other student concerns.
Credits
You will register for 12 academic credits: three each for two required seminars and six for
the internship.
Tuition and Fees
For the 12 (full-time) hours of credit, you will pay current Indiana University tuition. You
also will remain eligible for any scholarships or financial aid you would receive as an IU
student on campus.
Since you will not be on campus during the semester, your student activity and health fees are
waived. If you live in an IU dorm on campus, SPEA will arrange to release you from the
residence hall contract for the semester.
Housing, Transportation, Other Costs
Housing is arranged in nearby Silver Spring, Maryland. Typically, four interns share a two-bedroom
fully furnished apartment (long distance service is extra). These apartments offer a safe, convenient,
and attractive location for the interns.
You are responsible for arranging your own transportation to and from Washington, DC. The most economical
form of transportation once in DC is the rapid transit system (Metro). Other costs such as food, laundry,
transportation, and entertainment depend upon your lifestyle; generally, costs are higher in Washington
than in Indiana cities.
Eligibility
Students who meet graduation requirements prior to the beginning of the Washington program are
not eligible. You must be in good academic standing and maintain that standing throughout the
semester.
If you do not have a satisfactory GPA at the end of the semester preceding your internship, you
will not be permitted to enroll in the program, regardless of previous arrangements.
The School of Public and Environmental Affairs reserves the right to
remove at any time an intern who jeopardizes the Washington Leadership
Program, either through unsatisfactory academic performance or personal
misconduct.
Selection
Participants will be selected on the basis of their academic record, maturity, educational and
professional goals, and references.
As part of the selection process, each participant will be interviewed by the selection
committee, which consists of a SPEA administrator, a senior faculty member, and an academic
advisor.
