Internship Checklist

Important Note: Before a student begins an internship, an official SPEA internship contract must be submitted online for approval.

No credit will be awarded for internship hours completed prior to contract submission and approval.

Both of these prerequisite requirements must be fulfilled in order to be eligible for an internship experience:

  • Complete the class component of BE252 (V252—2 credit class, V381—1credit internship experience)
  • Visit the SPEA "Internship Information" section of the “Undergraduate Students” to make sure that you meet all academic eligibility requirements.

Once you have fulfilled all prerequisite requirements, the following sequence of steps must be completed to receive credit for your internship experience:

  • Complete and submit an internship contract online.
  • Receive an approval/internship authorization e-mail from the Office of Career Services. (This must be received before you begin your internship. Any hours logged before the contract is approved will not be counted.)
  • o Complete a minimum of 200 hours of internship experience (1 credit hour).

During the last week of your internship:
  • Submit all final paperwork online (summary report and supervisor evaluation). You will be responsible for submitting the summary report and making sure your supervisor submits your supervisor evaluation online.

Additional Information

  • The maximum number of internship contact hours that can be accumulated and counted for credit during one week is 40 hours. SPEA does not recognize or give credit for any hours accumulated beyond 40 over any one-week period.
  • If your internship experience will be more than 200 hours and you want to receive elective
credit for the additional hours then you need to:
    • The number of elective credits (80 hours for each additional credit) you plan to pursue must be indicated on the contract at the beginning of your internship and cannot be added or increased at a later date. Additionally, you are responsible for contacting the Office of Career Services to confirm that you wish to be authorized for elective credits at the beginning of your internship, 855-9639.
  • Maximum number of internship credits allowable:
    • The maximum number of credit hours you are allowed to sign up for in one
semester is 6 and the maximum number of credit hours that can possibly be earned
during your program of studies is 9—1 (required) and 8 (elective).
  • Listing Starting and Ending Dates:
    • It is very important that your contract includes a beginning and ending date and
that you list the average number of hours you anticipate working per week. If the
average number of weekly hours listed multiplied by the number of weeks you
will be interning is not consistent with the number of credit hours you plan to
attain then your contract may be held up and not approved until the situation has
      been clarified.

The Office of Career Services reserves the right to contact your internship supervisor at any point to audit the number of hours you have been working and/or to verify the legitimacy of your internship.
