Graduate Programs
As one of the first state universities to establish a Department of Religious Studies, Indiana University has a long
and distinguished tradition of graduate education in the study of religion. Our program combines the personal attention and flexibility of
a smaller program with the vast opportunities for language study, interdisciplinary endeavors, and teaching experience of a large public university.
As a faculty, we are committed to a study of religious texts and traditions that incorporates the diversity not only of the world's religions but
also of the scholarly methods and approaches with which we study them. You will find among us historians, philologists, philosophers, ethicists,
theorists of religion, and others whose work defies such labels. Despite the relative youth of our doctoral program, our graduates have been remarkably successful at landing tenure-track jobs at quality institutions and major post-doctoral fellowships. Our graduates teach at the following institutions, among others: American University, Augustana College, Ball State University, California State University at Chico, McGill University, North Carolina State University, Northern Arizona University, the University of Calgary, the University of Mississippi, the University of Richmond, and Virginia Wesleyan University. Already at least twelve books, from prestigious presses, have resulted from IU Religious Studies dissertations, and at least one of these has won a national prize. Explore our Web site for degree requirements, the research and teaching interests of our faculty, dissertations completed and in progress, and the opportunities for advanced study here at Indiana. You will find also links to the University Graduate School and its online application process. Our annual deadline for applications is January 15 (non-U.S. citizens should be sure to apply by Dec. 1st through the Office for International Admissions). . If you have any questions about our program or if you would like to meet me and other faculty members during a visit to Bloomington, please do not hesitate to contact me by e-mail. I wish you the best as you consider the possibilities of graduate education in religious studies. Please feel free to contact us for more information or to request an information packet! |
