Winter Commencement
Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie presided over the 2011 Winter Commencement, in which 1,983 students were eligible to participate. This number included undergraduates as well as graduate students whose degrees were awarded during September and October, and those who were candidates for November and December degrees. Randall T. Shepard, chief justice of the Indiana Supreme Court, addressed the Class of 2011 in Bloomington.

IU Art Museum returns painting to Berlin museum
More than 60 years after it disappeared from a Berlin museum in the chaotic aftermath of World War II, a painting depicting the flagellation of Christ returned home. The Indiana University Art Museum returned the painting to the Jagdschloss Grunewald in a ceremony Nov. 21 at Charlottenburg Palace in Germany.

2011 Distinguished Alumni Service Award Dinner
The Distinguished Alumni Service Award is IU's highest award given only to an alumna or alumnus. This year, IU President Michael A. McRobbie presented the award to five honorees. DASA recipients are chosen for services and achievements in their fields of endeavor and significant contributions to community, state, or nation. With the addition of this year's five recipients, IU has honored 310 alumni since the award’s inception in 1953.

Celebration of the life of former IU President John Ryan
John Ryan, the 14th president of Indiana University, died on August 6 at the age of 81. He served as president from 1971 to 1987 and will be remembered as the man who transformed IU into a multi-campus university that serves every region of the state. A Celebration of the Life of John Ryan was held in the Whittenberger Auditorium of the Indiana Memorial Union in Bloomington.

IU dedicates its new Cyberinfrastructure Building
The Indiana University Cyberinfrastructure Building (CIB) is the latest addition to the growing technology park at 10th Street and the Indiana State Road 45/46 Bypass. As the new home for the majority of Bloomington’s University Information Technology Services staff, the CIB is designed to visually represent IU’s cutting-edge technology environment and its commitment to innovation in service of the university’s teaching, learning, and research missions. President Michael A. McRobbie and University officials dedicated the new structure.

President McRobbie reports on his recent trip to India
In late August and early September, IU President Michael A. McRobbie led a group of Indiana University officials on an 11-day visit to India. They visited Mumbai, Bangalore, New Delhi and Hyderabad, which is a sister city to Indianapolis. The group met with leading university officials, business executives, political leaders and alumni. President McRobbie conducted this October forum with faculty and students to discuss the outcome of the trip.

2011 State of the University Address
Directly addressing a “complex and difficult set of issues” that includes declining state funding, tuition, student debt and questions about the basic value of higher education, Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie delivered the annual State of the University address at IU Bloomington. Speaking before an audience of IU faculty and staff gathered at the Indiana Memorial Union, McRobbie spoke candidly about each of these issues, while extolling the university’s efforts to become more efficient, affordable and engaged in the lives of Hoosiers across Indiana. “These efforts are not just reactions to the current economic situation,” McRobbie said. “They are our collective and ongoing efforts to define what it means to be a public university with a dual responsibility to the people of the state and to the academy.”

“Ten Years Later: The 9/11 Commissioners Reflect”
A decade after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, members of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, also known as the 9/11 Commission, gathered at Indiana University to discuss and reflect on that important time in our nation’s history. The event, “Ten Years Later: The 9/11 Commissioners Reflect,” took place at the IU Auditorium in Bloomington. The commissioners visited IU at the invitation of former U.S. Rep. Lee H. Hamilton, who directs the Center on Congress at IU and served on the commission as vice chairman.

Remembering September 11, 2001
Indiana University marked the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks with a variety of activities, including lectures and panel discussions, concerts, community service and opportunities for reflection and remembrance. President Michael A. McRobbie gave a speech at the IU Auditorium in Bloomington entitled, “A Collective Act of Memory: Remembering 9/11.”

IU’s SoFA Gallery is Renamed
Indiana University officials gathered to officially rename the School of Fine Arts Gallery (SoFA Gallery) to the Grunwald Gallery of Art in honor of John A. Grunwald, thanks to a significant endowed gift from his widow, Rita Grunwald. The Grunwald Gallery is in the Fine Arts Building in the center of the IU Bloomington campus. Exhibits are supplemented with educational performances, lectures, tours and other programs.

Welcome Week and “The Indiana Promise”
Near-record numbers of freshmen arrived on Indiana University’s Bloomington campus during the week of August 21. Many of them and their parents took time out from a variety of Welcome Week activities to attend the annual Freshman Induction Ceremony, a celebration of academic aspiration and success. Like all great universities, IU conducts ceremonies such as this with fanfare and pageantry, including remarks by President Michael A. McRobbie and Provost Karen Hanson. First-year students are invited to repeat the Indiana Promise, and they receive a keepsake IU pin.

The life and legacy of William A. Cook
Indiana University and Cook Group presented a celebration of life in memory of Bill Cook, founder of Cook Inc., at the IU Auditorium. The event included a reception and program celebrating the life and legacy of Cook. The celebration featured dignitaries who worked closely with Cook and musical performances. Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels also awarded Cook the Sachem award, the top honor the state office can bestow, posthumously.

182nd Indiana University Bloomington Commencement
IU Bloomington awarded 8,562 degrees as it celebrated its 182nd commencement on Saturday, May 7. Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie presided over two similar ceremonies in Assembly Hall, with the morning session starting at 10 a.m. and the afternoon session at 3 p.m. The processions of graduates began 45 minutes prior to each ceremony. Patricia R. Miller, co-founder of Vera Bradley Designs and former Indiana Secretary of Commerce, addressed both sessions of undergraduate students.

2011 Commencement for masters and doctoral graduates
Indiana University, again, conducted a separate ceremony for graduate students receiving master's and doctoral degrees as part of the Bloomington Campus spring Commencement activities. Until last year, graduate students had received their degrees along with undergraduate students in their respective schools. But IU President Michael A. McRobbie and Bloomington Provost Karen Hanson wanted to enrich the graduation experience for all participants and their families. Moving to a separate ceremony for graduate students allows for more time to focus on their distinct achievements and observe the academic tradition of hooding Ph.D. and doctoral candidates. The graduate ceremony was held Friday, May 6 at 3 p.m. in Assembly Hall.

2011 Honors Convocation

President McRobbie and Provost and Executive Vice President Karen Hanson presided over the 2011 Bloomington Honors Convocation Sunday, April 10 at 2 p.m. in the IU Auditorium. They saluted the IU Bloomington Founders Scholars, high-achieving students who have earned cumulative GPAs of 3.8 or higher, and other outstanding undergraduates who have distinguished themselves in scholarship, leadership and service.

Jacobs School of Music Groundbreaking

Indiana University has broken ground on an 85,000-square-foot Jacobs School of Music Faculty Studio Building. The building will be constructed on the northeast corner of Third Street and Jordan Avenue. The facility is expected to provide technologically and acoustically superior teaching and practice facilities to rival any music school or conservatory in the world, while also marking the entrance to the university's music, fine arts and performing arts district.

The project also involves an addition to the west side of the Musical Arts Center that will accommodate about 20,000 square feet consisting of three large rehearsal rooms, a storage area, an audio control room, music technical shops and common spaces.

The new Faculty Studio Building will contain 84 studios for faculty and assistant instructors as well as seminar rooms, administrative offices, graduate student spaces, mechanical support space and a faculty lounge.

IU Cinema Dedication

Two-time Academy Award nominee Peter Bogdanovich joined campus and community officials—including IU President Michael McRobbie, IU Bloomington Provost and Executive Vice President Karen Hanson and City of Bloomington Mayor Mark Kruzan—in heralding the opening of the new, nearly 260-seat IU Cinema, one of only about 10 THX-certified facilities on college campuses anywhere in the nation.

During the ceremony, McRobbie presented Bogdanovich, whose professional papers and film collection (consisting of more than 100,000 items) are housed near the new cinema at the IU Lilly Library, with an honorary degree recognizing his achievements as a film director and for his major contributions to the scholarship of film.

Winter Commencement
IU President Michael A. McRobbie presided over the Bloomington campus Winter Commencement ceremony on Saturday, December 18. More than 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students who completed their degrees during September and October were eligible to participate in the ceremony this year. This year's Commencement speaker was Vice Admiral Adam M. Robinson Jr., surgeon general of the U.S. Navy, chief of its Bureau of Medicine and Surgery and an Indiana University alumnus. And as part of Saturday's ceremony, Indiana University conferred the honorary degree Doctor of Humane Letters to Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand.

The installation of Dr. William J. Lowe as the sixth Chancellor of Indiana University Northwest was held on Friday, October 29, 2010 in the Savannah Recreation Center. The event theme focused on a renewed partnership between IU Northwest and the greater community.

Union Street Dedication
Indiana University formally dedicated Union Street Center, the first new residential complex to open on the IU Bloomington campus in more than 40 years.

Union Street Center offers one-, two-, and four-bedroom units to undergraduate students. All apartments are fully furnished and feature energy-efficient appliances, granite countertops, fully carpeted living rooms and bedrooms, ceramic bathroom flooring, wooden kitchen flooring, air conditioning, card-access security, cable television, wireless Internet service and insulated windows.

Chancellor Harris installation at IUK
Michael Harris was installed as Chancellor of the Indiana University Kokomo campus in a ceremony Friday, October 22, 2010. IU President Michael McRobbie conducted the official installation, followed by speakers Kathleen Ligocki, B.A.'78, L.H.D. '02, Dianne Roden, professor of finance, and Harris, Ph.D. '93.

Harris recently served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Kettering University in Flint, Mich. He worked for Kettering from 2007 to 2010, and was also a professor of public policy. He served as vice president for academic affairs at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Mich., from 2004-07and as associate provost at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Mich., from 2000-04. He earned a bachelor's degree in economics and business administration from Bar-Ilan University in Israel in 1982 and a master's degree in public management and budgeting from Tel Aviv University in Israel in 1986. He earned his Ph.D. from IU in 1993. He is also a graduate of the Harvard Graduate School of Education's Institute for Educational Management and the Management Development Program.

Indiana University's Bloomington campus has more than 7,000 students enrolled for the fall semester in its 2010-11 freshman class. Many of them took time out from a variety of Welcome Week activities to attend the annual Freshman Induction Ceremony, a celebration of academic aspiration and success.

NSF Grant Announcement
Indiana University has been awarded $9.2 million from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to lead two high-speed international network services. The awards provide IU with $4.6 million to continue the TransPAC3 network connection to Asia, and an additional $4.6 million for a new connection to Europe, named ACE—America Connects to Europe.

Federal Health Officials Announce $8.5M grant to School of Medicine
A grant of nearly $8.5 million to the Indiana University School of Medicine will enable the renovation of a former research floor of Riley Hospital for Children into a state-of-the-art facility for conducting clinical research trials that are designed for children. The IU grant is one of 146 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act construction awards, totaling $1 billion, to construct, repair and renovate scientific research laboratories and related facilities across the country. The grants were announced by U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius and National Institutes of Health Director Francis Collins, along with IU President Michael A. McRobbie and IU School of Medicine Dean D. Craig Brater.

2010 Commencement for Undergraduates
President McRobbie presided over IU Bloomington’s undergraduate commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 8, 2010. The campus’s 181st graduation ceremony featured the conferral of 7,358 degrees.

Legendary musical composer and arranger, record and television producer, magazine publisher, and trumpeter Quincy Jones Jr. addressed both sessions of undergraduate students. Jones also received an honorary Doctor of Music degree from IU.

Cyberinfrastructure Building (CIB) Dedication
President McRobbie presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for IU Bloomington’s new Cyberinfrastructure Building on Thursday, April 29. With 123,000 gross square feet and a 250-person, reconfigurable multipurpose space, the CIB is designed to be the social hub of the tech park area. The CIB will be home to the majority of IUB’s University Information Technology Services (UITS) staff, relocating administration from the heart of the main campus and enabling further development of both the academic core and the Bloomington tech park.

Cook Hall Dedication
IU Athletics formally dedicated its new basketball development center, Cook Hall, on Sunday, April 25 2010. The dedication ceremony was conducted on the men’s basketball practice court inside the new facility, which is adjacent to Assembly Hall on the Bloomington campus.

Physically connected to Assembly Hall via underground tunnel, Cook Hall serves as the daily headquarters for the men’s and women’s basketball programs, providing a state-of-the-art venue in which to practice, train and condition. The 67,000-square-foot, multilevel facility features practice courts, locker rooms, a strength and conditioning area, coaches’ offices and meeting/video rooms.

$60 Million Grant from Lilly Endowment
To help the Indiana University School of Medicine tap the powerful combination of science and medicine, Lilly Endowment Inc. has given the school $60 million, university and Endowment officials announced Tuesday. The funds will be used to implement the Indiana Physician Scientist Initiative.

Indiana University’s $32.7 million Data Center was formally dedicated by President McRobbie on November 5, 2009. The new facility is designed to ensure the safety and security of IU’s most prized networking, computer processing, and data storage equipment, including IU’s Big Red and Quarry supercomputers.

Myles Brand was the 16th President of Indiana University and served from 1994 to 2002. He was, put quite simply, one of Indiana University’s greatest presidents. Elinor Ostrom named Nobel laureate (press conference)
Elinor Ostrom, the Arthur F. Bentley professor of political science and professor of public and environmental affairs at Indiana University, receives this year’s Nobel Prize in Economic Science. The announcement was made Monday morning in Stockholm, Sweden. Ostrom is the first woman ever to receive the award. She will share it with Oliver E. Williamson, who is at the Walter A. Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. The two will share the prize for their separate work on economic governance, organization, cooperation, relationships and nonmarket institutions.

2009 Football Season Opener
IU kicked off its 125th year of football, debuting the new Memorial Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009. After two years of construction, the North End Zone Student-Athlete Development Center opened for both football and administrative personnel. At the heart of this new structure is the largest strength and conditioning center in the country, and a 25,000-square-foot area located at field level providing student-athletes in every varsity sport with access to brand new weight training and cardio equipment. The new space also features new offices, position and staff meeting rooms, and a team auditorium each equipped with state-of-the-art technology. IU’s Henke Hall of Champions celebrates Hoosier greats from all sports and is located on the top level of the North End Zone Student-Athlete Development Center. It features museum-quality displays and a large banquet area where Hoosier fans can gather to celebrate the past, present and future of IU Athletics.

For many Indiana University students, New Student Move-In Day marks the first step in becoming part of IU’s renowned tradition and truly feeling what it means to be a Hoosier. With fall classes still a few days away, Move-In Day 2009, which marked the beginning of Welcome Week, offered a chance for IU’s newest students to get settled and become acquainted with new friends. Among those on hand to greet students and their parents were IU President Michael McRobbie and Provost Karen Hanson, who later that day presided over the official Freshman Induction ceremonies in the IU Auditorium.

Hutton Honors College Dedication
The dedication for Indiana University’s new Hutton Honors College happened as planned—but sadly, without the presence of IU alumnus Ed Hutton, longtime friend of the university for whom the Honors College is named, and whose support made the new $3.5 million building possible. Hutton passed away on March 2 in Cincinnati.

After a whirlwind tour across Indiana, the bronze sculpture depicting Bloomington’s famous jazz composer and songwriter Hoagy Carmichael came home to rest in a permanent location on Indiana University’s campus. The Hoagy Carmichael Landmark Sculpture was dedicated with a public ceremony Sept. 18, 2008, in the grand foyer of the IU Auditorium.

IU Data Center Groundbreaking
A groundbreaking ceremony for the Indiana University Data Center was held Oct. 12, 2007. Once completed, the center will house the university’s cyber network infrastructure, which will include computers, data storage units and servers.
