RA position: design and implementation of a mobile health-tracking application for low-literacy, Mexican-American women

This position is funded by an NIH grant for 17 months. The goal is to design and implement a mobile application for the target population to record eating disorder behaviors (e.g., taking diuretics, vomiting, etc…). The RA will:
• Perform a needs assessment with the research team to determine what behavior data needs to be collected and the limitations of the population,
• Iteratively develop interface designs for mobile device incorporating feedback from research team and user-testing with target population,
• Implement a mobile application to collect the data,
• Beta-test data mobile app for short time (week) with target population to determine any adjustments that are necessary,
• Finalize implementation

Ideally, the RA would have experience in design methodologies (e.g., interviews, picture card studies) as well as mobile application development. If necessary, an applicant with only design skills may be hired for the summer (2012) and an applicant with strong programming skills hired for the academic year (2012-2013).

RA position: design and implementation of a health tracking application for low-SES patients enrolled in an obesity program

This position is funded by a grant from the Indiana CTSI for 1.5 to 2 years. The goal is to design and implement a self-monitoring system that can be used for real-time feedback and to support network ties among weight loss participants. The project is implemented in the context of HealthyMe, a free lifestyle weight management program that has been in place for over five years and has served thousands of patients. The RA will lead three, iterative design-implement cycles to develop different parts of the system: data capture with existing health tracking devices (e.g. Fitbit, Withings scale), communication with health coaches, and integration with social networking.

Ideally, the RA would have experience in design methodologies (e.g., interviews, focus groups, picture card studies) as well as mobile and web application development. If necessary, an applicant with only design skills may be hired for the summer (2012) and an applicant with strong programming skills hired for the academic year (2012-2013).

To apply for either position, please send your CV and cover letter to Kay Connelly (connelly@indiana.edu). Include in the cover letter the project you are interested in applying for and what skills you already have (design and programming). Skype interviews will be held the week of May 14th. Positions start June 1.
