How Will Your Grade Be Determined?

I. Three Papers – 60% of the Final Grade (20% Each)
At the end of each of the three sections of the course you will be presented with two questions arising from the material we have been studying in that section.  You will have ten days to compose a five-page paper in response to one of these questions, supporting your position with material drawn the readings, lectures, web materials, and class activities.

2. Weekly Web Assignments – 25 % of final grade
Each week an assignment will appear on the course web site.  These are designed to help structure your approach to the material, to give me feedback on what is and is not being understood, and to prove an incentive for you to keep up with the readings and the web materials.

3. Work in Teams – 15% of the Final Grade
Numerous pedagogical studies indicate that students learn most effectively in teams, and the very nature of the material we are studying lends itself to active small group interaction much more readily than to the passive reception of information through lecture.  Therefore, you will be assigned to a five-person team with which you will work across the semester.  You will regularly share ideas with your team and work together to respond to in-class assignments that should deepen your understanding of the ideas we are studying and prepare you to produce more effective papers at the end of each section.

N.B. There will be no final exam in this course.
