Indiana University Bloomington

The certificate program is open to all undergraduate students on the Bloomington campus and is designed for students who wish to gain a broad-based knowledge of Jewish Studies. More significant than a minor (which is not offered in Jewish Studies), the certificate is treated like another degree by the university.

Students can complete the minor in Hebrew along with the certificate.

Certificate Requirements

Completion of the following:

A student is responsible for enrolling in and earning a grade of C- or better in all 8 required courses. All required courses must be taken for a grade (not pass/fail).

Students choosing Modern Hebrew to fulfill the College of Arts & Sciences foreign language requirement need only four more courses (2 JS History & Society and 2 JS Religion & Thought) to complete the certificate.

Students in the Kelley School of Business can fulfill the Global Studies and Languages or Arts and Social Service field specializations by completing the requirements for the certificate in Jewish Studies plus one more credit hour.

Students in the School of Journalism can complete their second concentration by completing the requirements for the certificate in Jewish Studies or can choose instead to complete a Jewish Studies major by completing the Jewish Studies major requirements.

Students in the Jacobs School of Music can complete the certificate and a Bachelor of Music or they can choose to complete a B.S. in Music and an outside field (Jewish Studies). (Students in the School of Music who are interested in pre-cantorial studies should consider the Jewish Sacred Music Program as vocal performance majors.)

To enroll in the certificate program, call the Borns Jewish Studies Program (855-0453) to arrange an appointment to meet with the Jewish Studies advisor, Dr. Carolyn Lipson-Walker. Freshmen are encouraged to meet with the advisor in the Fall before registering for Spring courses.
