With these corrections, the minutes were approved as distributed.
2. Dean's report
CHL Report
CHL met last Friday, Feb. 20, 2009.
- Worldcat Local is progressing. OCLC wants to move into the maintenance role. The new screen will feature a Worldcat and IUCAT local search box. Hathi Trust has worked out an agreement with OCLC and there are 2.5 million volumes in the Hathi Trust. IU is a Mirror site.
- Google project-one shipment per month at present. They will do the entire Folklore Collection, and it will be the first collection of distinction for Google.
- David Lewis talked about his new job. He wants to get mini-plans going, working with faculty at IUPUI and IUB. The IUB libraries need to be involved as broadly as possible.
- Security policy and procedures were discussed. There isn't really much directed to students. So, if the libraries can help present information on this topic, we'd be glad to do so.
- Dean search-We don't know much about it. We haven't seen many communications. Phil reported that there will be calls for nominations. The job description needed some lengthy discussion, but it should be ready by now. A formal job posting should appear soon. There is a search firm, so it might be sending out information, but we don't know for certain.
- Google book settlement and CIC aspect of that--CIC has a negotiating team, and Pat Steele is on it. The library directors discussed issues and created a list of items for negotiating. It's being examined by our attorneys. We don't have a document from Google yet. Google can certainly provide services for us, but with no draft document yet, things are not moving forward. We are talking with other libraries about issues, which is a help. We do know that everyone wants to continue with digitization, but a settlement needs to be generated.
- Sustainability and activities at various campuses-IUB just named a sustainability officer-a former library architect, Bill Brown. Kathy McCarnes is working on it for the library.
- Boopsie (sic?)-Searches very intuitively and is super quick, goal is within 6 key strokes.
- Instruction conference for CHL--Carrie Donovan and Maria [last name?] from IUPUI drafted a charge for the group and it's been accepted by CHL. A meeting will be called soon. It's similar to the Cataloging Congress. They will see how they can promote instructional activities, how they can use technology, etc.. CHL looked at the future and how we might operate with various technologies (Worldcat Local is an example). The shared goals document will provide a guideline for the group.
- Budget-Some campuses have increased enrollment, others have decreases. The economy downturn is unlike previous cycles, so the old dictum of bad economy = higher enrollment doesn't apply at some campuses. IUPUI is cutting materials budget. IUB still isn't clear on effects of downturn. Legislature wants a one percent increase, governor wants a 5 percent decrease. There is not a big push for tuition caps. Also, it's still uncertain how stimulus money will be apportioned in Indiana. It's possible that we might get building funds from it, but no sustainability funds to maintain them.
3. IULFC Committee Reports
- IULFC Faculty Standards Committee-Joe Harmon reported as IULFC liaison. Committee has nothing on their plate at the moment. Pat Steele has language changes and edits for the Library Faculty Handbook. Shawny has been working on it, and it's mostly housekeeping editing, not a lot of substantial changes. IULFC agreed today to send these edits to the FSC. Joe will let the Committee know that the document will be coming.
- IULFC Research Committee-Sherri Michaels, IULFC liaison, said Pam Sandstrom had nothing to report.
- IULFC White Award Committee-Elizabeth Johnson, IULFC liaison, has nothing yet for 2009 because of the timing of the deadline, but Sonja Staum and Jenn Riley were co-awardees in 2008. Joe wondered if we will combine the two awards into one. Pat Steele replied that they have indeed been combined. It's the same monetary award amount, but distributed differently. Pat will verify the numbers with Susan, and Susan will get something out to all of us.
- IULFC Librarians' Day Committee-Kristi Palmer, IULFC liaison, reported that Librarians' Day will be held at the IUPUI Campus Center on May 15. The call for programs deadline is March 20. So far, the program includes a variety of topics and the meeting should be an interesting one.
4. IULFC Elections and Appointments-The time for elections and appointments to IULFC committees is fast approaching. Steve McShane will work with Sherri Michaels, incoming IULFC secretary, Shawny, and the three IUL groups (BLFC, IUPUI Library Faculty, and RCL) to find nominees/appointees. Judith Garrison and Steve will constitute the RCL Nominating Committee. We hope to have people in place by July 1.
5. Old Business--There was no old business.
6. New Business--There was no new business.
7. Adjourn-The meeting adjourned at 11:10 am.
Respectfully submitted,
Stephen G. McShane
Secretary, IULFC, 2008-2009
