The meeting was called to order at 10:00 am.
1. Approval of minutes
Approval of the minutes - A motion was made by Harmon to approve the minutes and seconded by Ralston. Motion carried.
2. Election of secretary for 2008-2009
In accordance with the prescribed rotation, the secretary of the IULFC for 2008-2009 should be from a regional campus. McShane agreed to fill this position.
3. Dean's report
Future of the catalog: A replacement for IUCAT is being considered with WorldCat Local as one possibility. There are issues with OCLC numbers not being present in some IUCAT records. The OPAC committee will develop principles of a catalog and compile issues for a sub-group of the CHL to work on in the spring.
Sirsi: The conversion to Unicode has been delayed until at least 2009. Stanford may convert in December 2007. It is not a viable product right now. When we do convert it will take 8 days to complete. There will be an upgrade to Symphony in May, 2008.
The R2 Service review is available on the intranet. It recommends moving more routine work into outsourcing. Up to 50% of monograph acquisitions could be received shelf-ready, but specialized cuttering is an issue. Automating billing and authority work is also recommended.
Cha-Cha will go online later in October. Reference Librarians system-wide will act as guides. Authentication issues and some more programming still remain.
Alumni access to library resources. Beginning this May, all graduates will keep their email address. Help is currently provided with access to Inspire, making others library resources available to alumni will be pursued.
Indiana Light Archive for Federal Documents allows depository libraries outside of the four major Indiana depositories to dispose of their copies of government documents.
There is a local reference initiative on the IUSB campus where librarians go out into busy student areas with laptops to help students with their research.
ALF 2 is not completely funded. The IUB campus would like to put in film. It is at 107% capacity already. Ideas are afloat for increasing capacity.
Librarians are being asked to adhere to different promotion and tenure standards on some campuses. The Dean met with the Dean of Faculties and the Provost in Bloomington to discuss issues. Librarian criteria cannot be changed at the campus level.
IUPUI and IUB are collaborating on digital repository development.
Oncourse library tools are still not easy for faculty to use.
The University Library at IUPUI has created a document on expectations for hours on site for Librarians.
Michele Russo has been made Dean of Libraries for the South Bend Campus.
A white paper is coming out on branch service models that will recommend branch library reconfigurations at IUB.
Phyllis Davidson is retiring in November. Strategic planning for the digital library will be taken on by the new person in her position.
4. IULFC Committee Appointments
All members of the Librarians Day Committee will carry over from last year. One member for the White Award Committee is needed from IUPUI and one from IUB. Dean Steele will seek a volunteer from IUB and Ralston will seek a volunteer from IUPUI.
5. IULFC Committee Charges
There were no charges for the committees at present.
6. Appointment of IULFC Committee Liaisons
Research - Steve McShane, White Award - Joe Harmon, Librarians' Day - Alison Stankrauff.
7. Old Business
IUPUI dossiers will route through their campus librarians' committee this year and not through the system-wide committee. IUPUI librarians will continue on the system-wide committee this year until a new membership formula can be devised.
The Dean is exploring the possibility of hiring someone to propose revisions to the librarians' sections IU Academic Handbook.
