Indiana University Libraries Faculty Council (IULFC)
Members: Diane Dallis (IUB), Chair, Kathy Marlett (IUB), Lois Sewell (IUB), Monique Threat (IUB), Felicia Young (IUN), Joseph Harmon, (IUPUI) – resigned 03/28/02
IULFC Liaison: James BaldwinLibrarian’s day 2002 Directions in Teaching, Research, and Library Services was held on May 17th at the IUPUI campus. There were over 90 attendees of which 82 pre-registered. The program evaluations were overall very positive. Thirty-seven evaluation forms were returned and all 37 indicated that they were glad they attended. Attached is spreadsheet that details the results of the evaluations (evaluations.xls).
The committee members were appointed in March and began planning immediately. One of the committee members was from the campus that was chosen as the location and that member resigned from the committee. The committee chair requested another member from the IULFC Liaison but did not receive a response. The lack of an IUPUI representative on the committee made planning difficult and time consuming.
The committee members served as liaisons to each of the program and poster session presenters. The program selection was voted on by the committee. The committee in some cases had to seek presenters for programs and as a result the majority of the presenters were from IUB. The committee worked hard and very quickly on planning and coordinating.
The committee was unable to schedule rooms for lunch and all of the programs and for the lunch. The solution to this problem was to schedule rooms in the IUPUI Law School and to divide the lunch into discussion interest groups. The lunch break interest groups were well received; however, attendance at the programs held in the Law School was low in all cases.
The IULFC Research Committee and the Promotion and Tenure Committee were invaluable to the success of the event. The Research Committee proposed and presented several poster sessions and the “Virtual Research” program. The Promotion and Tenure Committee presented two programs on the promotion and tenure process.
Recommendations
The 2002 Librarian’s Day Committee had many difficulties in planning and executing the event due to some unusual circumstances. With the hope that the next committee has a better experience, the committee respectfully makes the following recommendations for the IULFC to consider.
- Appoint the Librarian’s Day Committee in January.
- Consider appointing a committee of past chairs to create a how-to manual for Librarian’s Day planning (the current one is a history not a manual)
- Select the chair of the committee from the campus on which the event will be held.
- Return to the model of three committee members.
- Update the IULFC web site to reflect current committee members, contacts, and document.
