IU BI Roadmap
The ‘IU Business Intelligence Roadmap’ is a collection of planning documents, each focused on a key aspect of the initiative.
Core Business Drivers
The core business drivers are a set of key institutional objectives around which we design the BI solutions. These drivers will inform our decision making process as we identify priorities, define information requirements and ensure that solutions are aligned with and support objectives at all levels.
Guiding Principles
Part of BI planning is the development of a set of guiding principles which help guide decision making and influence the way we operate. These principles identify critical values related to information, processes & outcomes and governance to guide us.
Critical Success Factors
There are several factors essential to the success of the IU BI Initiative including sponsorship, resource availability, planning and communication. These represent the guidelines we will use throughout the initiative to increase the potential for success and avoid potential risks.
Planning
This is an ambitious task that will require a significant amount of time. We are planning an incremental approach for continuous improvement as opposed to a ‘Big Bang’ implementation. Developing a comprehensive plan for the initiative is critical for setting expectations and understanding resources requirements.
Value and Benefits
There are many benefits which come as a result of implementing BI including aligning information around our strategic goals, enabling fact-based decision making and providing information that is easy to access, reliable and consistent. Decision making becomes less costly and more powerful.
User Types & Needs
Our BI initiative must support a wide variety of information consumers, each of whom may have unique needs for the information, how it is presented, and the tools required for analysis and interaction. The solution needs to address the needs of decision makers, analysts and information providers.
Communications
As the BI initiative proceeds it will be important to provide timely, appropriate communications designed for specific audiences such as BI Initiative participants, users we will interview, and the Indiana University community at large. In addition to our web presence we will be providing additional communications.
Governance
We are planning to engage several groups over time to help us with the BI initiative in order to set priorities, provide resources, and provide leadership and support. Groups will be made up of individuals from a wide cross section of departments, roles and responsibilities.
Education
The concept of BI is complex, new to many and is constantly evolving as BI becomes more pervasive in Higher Ed. We are planning a variety of educational opportunities to those involved in this initiative from both technical and functional areas. Our web site contains links to resources anyone can use.
