Descriptive Text:

On Thursday, November 30, 2017, the IAUNRC co-sponsored the following lecture:

Resilient in the Face of a Curse? Resource Dependence and Democracy in Mongolia

Democracy is argued to have arrived and thrived in Mongolia unexpectedly, defying theories of social science and commonsense expectations. How has Mongolia's abundance in natural resources affected its democracy? Does Mongolia stand as an exception, yet again, to the `political resource curse'? In this talk, Delgerjargal answers these questions by empirically examining several mechanisms that social science literature suggests link resource dependence and political regimes in context of Mongolia. She draws on original as well as secondary data sources.

Delgerjargal Uvsh is a Ph.D. Candidate in Department of Political Science, University of Wisconsin—Madison.
