CSME Outreach GA Position
The Center for the Study of the Middle East (CSME) promotes multi- and inter-disciplinary knowledge of the Middle East by supporting academic programs, scholarships, public outreach, and support for educators and students at all levels. CSME seeks an outreach graduate assistant (GA) for the 2017-2018 academic year to assist the Center in organizing events and expanding membership.

This position is a standard graduate assistantship and applicants should expect to work 20 hours per week at the Center’s building on campus. Duties might vary week-to-week, depending on active projects, but in general the GA will be expected to:

•Create agendas for weekly staff meetings and contribute ideas for events

•Take an active role in planning, organizing, and implementing events (including reachingout to potential speakers, making travel arrangements, scheduling/reserving venues, placingcatering orders, creating advertising flyers, contacting media, recording event data, etc.)

•Clearly articulate CSME’s mission statement and details of upcoming events

•Be familiar with campus in order to distribute flyers throughout campus for upcomingevents

•Learn the existing procedures for advertising and be able to complete at all levels andexpand upon it

•Design and create flyers, brochures, cards, etc. using Photoshop, Publisher, or similar

•Manage CSME’s website and social media sites, including Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube

•Suggest creative ways to increase CSME’s social media and listserv subscribers

•Work on a team and independently

•Initiate communication (in-person, phone, email) and finish assignments with limitedguidance

•Participate in community and campus events that require an active CSME presence (mayrequire working some evenings and/or weekends)

•Be proficient in Windows, Microsoft Office Suite, Google Docs and social media sites(experience with Adobe Creative Suites CS4 and/or CS5 a plus)

•Perform other office duties as needed, including, but not limited to, handling confidentialmaterials, photocopying/scanning, sorting mail, answering phones, and providing clericalservices

•Be creative, energetic, a master multitasker, and self-leading

•Not be overwhelmed by last-minute changes or ambiguity

Applicants must be a current graduate student in SGIS or with G901 status within the College of Arts and Sciences at Indiana University Bloomington during the 2017-2018 academic year. Applicants should have an interest in the Middle East and preferably have knowledge of one or more languages of the Middle East or North Africa.

The GA position includes a stipend, a fee remission, and IU’s student health insurance.
