CEUS R 309/ 509 Estonia’s Place: Borders and Neighbors

This course will explore how the country’s location, regional and historical contacts have shaped Estonian culture, language and identity and how they continue to do so today. We will also observe the very local factor of Estonia’s geographical place, including the landscape as a shaper of and reflection of culture. The course will introduce Estonia as a Baltic state and Estonians as one of the Finno-Ugric peoples, historical contacts with Germany, Russia, Scandinavia (Sweden) and Finland. Estonia’s position and cultural contacts in the globalizing world.
