Turkish Poetry Night

Turkish Flagship and the Turkish Students Association at Indiana University invite learners and speakers of Turkish to participate in this year’s Turkish Poetry Night, Thursday, February 16th from 7:00-8:30 PM (IU campus location TBA). There will be Valentine's Day-themed refreshments and prizes for the best performers in each of three categories: Turkish learners, native speakers of Turkish, and speakers of other Turkic languages (presenting in Turkish). Special consideration will be given to those who have memorized their poems and those presenting original poems!
If you would like to READ a poem, please RSVP to this email by Monday, February 6th.
Then, please send us the following information by February 14 at 5:00 PM.
· Title of poem and poet’s name in Turkish
· Short, 1-2 sentence bio of the poet in English, include a photo if you'd like
· 1-2 sentence synopsis of poem in English
· Short, 1-2 sentence bio about yourself in English
"Demir kafeste dolaşan aslan," Nâzım Hikmet Ran
In 1928, Nâzım Hikmet wrote “Lion in an Iron Cage” to champion communist revolution in the face of oppression. Hikmet (b. 1902-d.1963) is a Turkish poet, playwright and novelist known for his lyricism, communist ideology, and frequent political arrests.
Caroline Stokes, a senior who has been studying Turkish for five year, is a Program Assistant for the Turkish Flagship Center. She enjoys cooking menemen in her spare time.
