The Feminism and Authoritarianism in the Middle East workshop on April 3-4, 2014 was centered around recent revolutionary developments through the Middle East and the important work of feminists in tackling the local and international complexities of the struggle for women’s rights in the face of political Islam, increasing sectarianism and militarism and new forms of authoritarianism.  Eight guest speakers discussed the feminist movements in Tunisia, Egypt, Turkey, and Egypt.

Michael Morony "The New Social Order(s): Social and Economic Realities in the Early Islamic World"

Professor Michael Morony will be giving a lecture entitled "The New Social Order(s): Social and Economic Realities in the Early Islamic World." Professor Morony, of UCLA, specializes in social and economic history of the early Islamic Near East, particularly Iraq and Syria. He is the author of several books, including a translation of a portion of the History of al-Tabari, as well as a historical study on early Islamic Iraq.

The event will be held in the Tudor Room of the Indiana Memorial Union on November 2, 2013. Doors will open at 8:00PM and the program will commence at 8:30.

Dinner will also be served and there will be a number of speakers and performers as a part of our program.
