Finnish Movie Night on November 28th: Rare Exports

Back by popular demand: The last movie night of the semester is Rare Exports, a dark holiday comedy, in which you have to “forget everything you know about Santa”. The movie will be screened already on Monday, November 28th so it won’t overlap with Finnish Culture Night which takes place on Monday, December 5th at 6 pm in the IMU Faculty Room.

Finnish Culture Night is free and open to all and it is organized by students of IU Finnish Studies Program. The event will take place in the IMU Faculty Room on December 5th at 6-8 pm.

Elisa Räsänen Interview

Elisa Räsänen is the new Finnish lecturer in the Department of Central Eurasian Studies.  She holds an undergraduate degree in Finnish Language and Literature and a masters degree in Teaching Finnish as a Second and Foreign Language from the University of Jyväskylä, Finland.

Finland in the 1970’s. A new genre of music, punk, is starting to find its way to a small Finnish town in the north called Oulu. Time to say good-bye to Abba and hello to Sex Pistols and updated values.

On October 7, 2016, Dr. Silvina Montrul gave a lecture entitled "The Acquisition of "Other" "Different"  "Lesson Common"  "Distant" Languages: A Critical Need."  She presented at IU's Second Conference on Central Asian Languages and Linguistics (ConCALL-2). Professor Montrul received her PhD in Linguistics from the Department of Linguistics at McGill University.

Lotus Festival

Heavy rain on Friday night and early Saturday afternoon didn’t stop thousands of people from attending the 2016 Lotus World Music Festival in downtown Bloomington this past weekend. The festival, now in its 23rd year, ran from September 15 through September 18. This year, the IAUNRC was proud to sponsor performances by three groups: Söndörgo (Hungary), Aallotar (Finnish-American Folk), and Anda Union (Mongolia). Both Aallotar and Söndörgo gave multiple performances throughout the weekend. Anda Union only performed one set on Saturday evening.

Kalle is the popular male lead in the same soap. Soon fiction and reality start to get mixed up when Ilona begins including elements from their own lives into the script.
