John McDowell Fieldwork Photo Collection

These photographs take us to field sites in different regions of Latin America. The largest group comes out of two sites in the Andes, the Sibundoy Valley of Colombia and northern Ecuador in the vicinity of Otavalo in Imbabura Province, and shows our companions and compadres and some of their activities.  A second set comes from the southern coast of Mexico, from a region known as the Costa Chica, in the states of Guerrero and Oaxaca, where our primary concern was to document the song tradition of the region, especially the ballads known as corridos. I threw in just one shot from Old Havana, for a bit of Caribbean spice.

Photos by John McDowell and Patricia Glushko (with a little help from their friends).
