Frequently Asked Questions

  1. When I play the Triton, I can hear it, but Digital Performer can't record the notes.

Make sure you have a record-enabled MIDI track in Digital Performer.

Make sure the pushbutton on the front of the MIDI interface is in the out position.

  2. When I'm recording a track in Digital Performer, I hear two sounds when I play a note, instead of the one sound that I want.

Turn off Local Control on the Korg.

  3. When I click on the Default Patch column in Digital Performer and choose a bank, the menu of patches covers the menu of banks, so that I can't change banks.

Move the Tracks window to a different part of the screen and try again. This should cause the patch menu to pop up without covering the bank menu.

  4. When I play my sequence in Digital Performer, I don't hear the sound of any Korg tracks.

This could be due to any number of problems. Here are a few common possibilities.

  5. How do I add new tracks in Digital Performer?

Project > Add Track > MIDI Track (or choose whatever kind of track you need)

  6. When I change a patch on one track in Digital Performer, another track changes to the same patch.

Make sure that the tracks have unique MIDI channels (e.g., "Triton Le-1" on the OUTPUT device pop-up menu for a track). Note that when you add tracks (using Project > Add Track > MIDI Track), the new track uses channel 1, which another track may already be using.

  7. When I try to save my Digital Performer project, I get a message that mentions error number -5000.

This is because you're running your project from the server — that is, the file you opened is on the server, instead of on your local computer's hard drive. You can use the Save As command to save your file onto the Desktop. In the future, always copy projects from the server to the Desktop before opening them.

  8. I'm trying to play sounds in Reason, but I don't hear anything. My Reason rack is set up correctly.

Make sure Digital Performer is not running. (Check the Dock at the bottom of the screen — there should be no DP icon.) Or, set up Digital Performer to communicate with Reason, as described in the second part of Exercise 2.

  9. I'm trying to load a sound file into the Reason sampler, but Reason refuses, saying the file is in an unrecognized format.

Open the file in QuickTime Player (available from the Multimedia menu in the Dock). Use File > Export, and choose Sound to Wave from the Export pop-up menu. Set Desktop as the destination for your file, and press Save.
