Michiko Owaki

Volunteer

As a volunteer in the EASC outreach program, Michiko Owaki has performed a Japanese tea ceremony, taught calligraphy to middle and high school students, and talked about Japanese culture to middle school students through a video conferencing link. She came to Bloomington from Japan to join her husband, a New Zealander who is an IU professor. Although she enjoys many hobbies, such as playing the piano and gardening, her volunteer work has been particularly enriching. “I love having the opportunity to share the rich traditions of Japanese culture with people here,” she says. “It helps promote mutual understanding between the two cultures.”

By educating about Asia for more than 30 years, Indiana University’s East Asian Studies Center has been a leading resource for the university, professional communities, K-12 schools, and the general public. As state funding for higher education decreases, our ability to prepare the next generation of educators and practitioners depends increasingly on gifts from generous alumni and friends.

We encourage you to support the East Asian Studies Center.

  • Volunteer: There are several volunteer opportunities available for people who wish to donate their time and skills to the EASC.
  • Make a donation: Every gift makes a difference for our students, faculty, and K-12 teachers. There are a number of options for giving, including specific EASC funds.
