Richard Rubinger
Professor of East Asian Languages and Cultures
Straddling two disciplines—Japanese language/history and comparative education—Richard Rubinger brings new insights to his teaching and research on Japanese culture. His recently published Popular Literacy in Early Modern Japan traces the development of literacy among Japan’s commoner populations through four centuries, looking especially at the role of village headmen as mediators of literacy and culture.

Indiana University’s Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures offers a variety of bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree programs for the study of East Asia.
Bachelor’s Programs
Undergraduate students can choose between two B.A. majors:
- Language and Culture (Chinese, Japanese, or Korean)
- East Asian Studies
Master’s Programs
The department offers three M.A. programs, as well as two joint/dual degrees in partnership with professional schools.
- M.A. in Chinese or Japanese
- M.A. in Chinese or Japanese Language Pedagogy
- M.A. in East Asian Studies
Joint/Dual Degrees
- M.A. in East Asian Studies/M.B.A. through the Kelley School of Business
- M.A. in East Asian Studies/M.P.A. through the School of Public and Environmental Affairs
Doctoral Program
Students in the Ph.D. program train for careers in teaching and research at the college and university level. The department offers a Ph.D. in Chinese or Japanese as well as a Ph.D. minor in Chinese, Japanese, or East Asian Studies.
Secondary Teacher Certification in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean
Indiana University certifies secondary school teachers in East Asian languages. The certification program is offered through the School of Education and Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures.
