Letter from the Director

Dear EASC Colleagues, Students, and Friends,

As our gift to you for the holiday season, we hope that you enjoy this issue of the EASC Newsletter.   Above all, it showcases IU’s world class talent and resources in East Asian Studies.  Our faculty and students have joined scholars from around the world to enliven programs that ranged from the IU Cinema film series on Making War, Making Peace in East Asia to the diverse presentations that energized our colloquia, from our partnership with Australian National University to enable IU students to study Cantonese to our collaboration with the Center on Global Studies to bring the opportunity to study Chinese putonghua to local school children.  It also highlights our many educational outreach activities, funded generously by the Freeman Foundation and the U.S. Department of Education, and notes the significant scholarly achievements and contributions of our EASC affiliated students and faculty.  These pages represent the commitment and hard work of the EASC staff, just as many of you have served on our committees, provided lectures for our seminars, and volunteered your skills and knowledge to visiting delegations, student groups, and community organizations.   I thank you all for your energetic support of EASC, and I wish you three very happy weeks of rest and revitalization before we begin the new semester and another exciting round of events and activities devoted to our key mission of educating about East Asia.

Happy Holidays,

Heidi Ross
