Director’s Letter

Letter from the Director

Dear Friends and Supporters of EASC,

Putting aside for a moment the riveting political and social headlines on both sides of the Pacific, we extend this gift to you, our snapshot of the goings on at the East Asian Studies Center and the scholars, educators, and students who make our efforts possible and worthwhile. If you haven’t been in Memorial Hall lately, please stop by to see us in January. For an uplifting break, admire the artwork of Japanese school children that graces our office walls, reminding us of the reparative networks that enhance our understanding of the world around us.

Beer Can TreeOr join us in some new year’s bricolage, inspired by friend and colleague, Karen Christensen, CEO and publisher extraordinaire, Berkshire Publishing. Karen’s holiday card from Beijing featured this photo, snapped outside her favorite restaurant, of a Christmas tree constructed of beer cans. Can’t get much more “in the spirit” than this off-beat tower of treats! Do you have a quirky image of the globalization of celebration that you’d like to send to us? Christmas in Xian? Chinese Spring Festival in Colorado? If you do, please share it with us. We’ll create an ensemble featuring some of the notable artifacts we use to give our lives meaning.

Until next semester, join me in celebrating the numerous achievements of East Asian Studies at Indiana University. And have a happy, peaceful and prosperous new year.

Warmly, Heidi
