New Online Curriculum: Lesson Plan on Tibet and China
A new lesson plan on Tibet and China is available at the East Asian Studies Center’s Web site. Developed by a curriculum specialist and a China specialist, this lesson plan addresses Standard 7 (Conflict and Cooperation) of the Geography and History of the World standards for Indiana high schools through a case study of the conflict between Tibet and China. All readings, resources, and activities are included.
New Online Curriculum: Imaging Japanese History
The Program for Teaching East Asia at the University of Colorado is hosting a free online curriculum designed to enhance students’ visual literacy while deepening their understanding of Japanese history. Imaging Japanese History contains five modules, available at http://www.colorado.edu/cas/tea/imagingjapan:
- A Case Study of Heian Japan through Art: Japan’s Four Great Emaki
- A Case Study of Medieval Japan through Art: Samurai Life in Medieval Japan
- A Case Study of Tokugawa Japan through Art: Views of a Society in Transformation
- The Path to Modernization in Popular Art: From Yokohama Prints to Taisho Chic
- A Case Study of Late Twentieth-Century Japan through Art: Tezuka Osamu and Astro Boy
Each module includes an introductory essay and an interactive lesson that engages students in close readings of art as historical texts in order to better understand the period. Designed for secondary social studies and art history teachers, the modules touch on major questions and content from the National Standards for World History. This project is funded through a grant from the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership.
