Monsters & the Monstrous

The study of Japanese monsters and ideas of the monstrous offers a means to understand the nature and rhetoric of contemporary, global culture more generally.
Our March 2007 “Monsters and the Monstrous in Premodern Japanese History and Culture” workshop and our March 2008 workshop on modern Japanese history and culture provided us with print, film, and courses, Web sites, and online resources to explore and understand Japan’s cultural tradition of monsters and the monstrous.
Both workshops were generously funded by the Toshiba International Foundation.
