Qiong Jiang

Qiong Jiang is the outreach coordinator of EASC. She holds an MA in Mass Communication from the University of Oregon, specializing in international communication. During her graduate studies, she acted as a media specialist for the Oregon Chinese K-16 Flagship Program. Before coming to the United States, she worked as a journalist in China for over five years, where she produced radio programs that focused on cultural exchange. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking, cooking, salsa dancing, and listening to NPR.

Cathy Gao

Cathy Gao is a first-year Master’s student of Arts Administration. While studying at Indiana University Bloomington, she also works part time as an outreach assistant at EASC. Before beginning graduate studies, she worked as an IB Economics teacher for three years at a leading private school in Shanghai and then as a marketing assistant at the Shanghai Branch of a St. Louis-based architecture firm.

Richard Bohr

Faculty expert Richard Bohr is a history professor and the Director of Asian Studies at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University in Minnesota. He writes, presents, and consults on U.S.-China relations and intercultural communications. He appears regularly on Minnesota Public Radio and has done China-related documentary and commentary for PBS Television, including The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer and Religion and Ethics NewsWeekly. Since 1980, he has organized and led study tours of China for students, faculty, and business people and is now developing an interdisciplinary course on doing business with China.
Bohr holds a Ph.D. in Modern Chinese History from the University of California, Davis; an M.A. in East Asian Studies and M.Div. degrees from Harvard University; and a B.A. degree, summa cum laude, in East Asian History from the University of California, Davis.

John Frank

Tour Curriculum Consultant John Frank is a history teacher at Center Grove High School in the Indianapolis area. John has developed curriculum materials for EASC and traveled to China, Japan, and Korea on many occasions. His hobbies include hiking, reading about history, and travel.

After beginning my teaching career in California in 1991, I moved back to Minnesota in 1998 and currently teach AP and regular World History at Stillwater Area High School, Stillwater, MN. My three grown children and 1 1/2 grandchildren still live on the West Coast. I have traveled to Europe, but this trip to China will be my first experience in Asia.

Jerry Bizjak

I teach World History and Economics at Albert Lea High School in Minnesota which is 100 miles straight south Minneapolis St. Paul. This is my 15th year of teaching and coaching in southern Minnesota. My wife Rachelle and three young daughters are incredibly understanding about me pursuing my passion for travel. In my brief spare time, I like to downhill ski, golf, and exercise. I’m really looking forward to experiencing China.

I learned to work on the back deck of my father’s shrimp boat in Louisiana. I studied development economics at Princeton and curriculum instruction at Harvard and was in the Peace Corps in Paraguay. I am married to an Austrian; we have 3 Cajun-Austrian children. I love teaching, gardening, traveling, reading, and working to restore Louisiana’s coast.

I have been a Government teacher at the same suburban Indianapolis school for over 30 years. I was a member of a Rotary GSE team in Yokohama. For 15 years I have concentrated my Professional Development work with the Center of Civic Education; this program has allowed me to participate in summer Institutes throughout the United States and Riga, Latvia.

I am Jessica Bryant (call me JJ), and I'm from Kentucky. I teach eighth grade language arts. I have two wonderful sons--Tyler, 17, and Matthew, 10. We love to learn and travel, and my family is so excited for me. I can't wait to learn in China with all of you.

My name is Gale Carter. I have taught the Social Sciences for the past 13 years at East Chicago Central High School in Indiana. I received my B.S. in Secondary Social Studies Education from New York University and my M.A. in American History from Purdue. I have two adult sons.

Jona Hall

My name is Jona Hall and I teach seventh grade social studies at Marietta Middle School in Marietta, OH. I have been teaching for nine years. My husband and I reside in downtown Marietta with our pets and enjoy every aspect of the river city, especially boating on the Ohio River. I am enthusiastic about the opportunity to meet everyone and travel to China.

I am an 8-year, 7th grade social studies teacher in Pulaski County, Kentucky. I have a BS in middle school education from Eastern Kentucky University and a Masters in Education from the University of Missouri-Columbia. I have three daughters, which includes twins, and one grandson. I am a retired Marine. I read avidly, dabble with writing and enjoy traveling.

I am a history teacher at Isidore Newman School, an independent school in New Orleans, LA. I currently teach 8th-grade Cultural Geography and 10th-grade European History and AP European History. I have travelled extensively in Europe over the past number of years and I am looking forward to visiting China.

I teache World History, East Asian Studies, and African American History at Hinsdale Central High School, in Hinsdale, Illinois. I am also an assistant coach for the boys cross country and track teams. I have previously been a participant in the Fulbright Memorial Fund study tour to Japan and the Korea Society study tour.

Heather Longstreth

Currently I am in my 5th year teaching 7th and 8th grade social studies in Linden, Michigan (a small, rural town north of Detroit). I graduated from Michigan State University with a B.A. in Political Theory and Constitutional Democracy and an M.A. in Curriculum and Teaching. Throughout college and my teaching career, I have been dedicated towards multicultural education, diversity studies, and international travel. Most recently, I participated in the 2008 Korean Studies Workshop in Seoul, South Korea. Sharing my experiences with students allows them to see I teach social studies, not just as a career, but because it is something I truly love and actively seek out. I look forward to participating in the NCTA program and sharing the benefits of it with my students, staff, and the greater community.

MaryAnn Mathews

I am a veteran Social Studies teacher currently teaching at Plaza Park Middle School in Evansville, Indiana. I have led student trips to Washington, D.C., and have participated in study trips as a delegate or chaperone to Lithuania and Ireland. A native of Chicago, I am a former special education teacher and journalist. I am also a singer, guitarist and hammered dulcimer player. I perform historic interactive programs with music and stories through my performance duo Past Times Past Tunes and also perform with Rowan Tree, an Irish Traditional Band. I hold degrees from Northwestern University and West Virginia College of Graduate Studies (now part of Marshall University). I am married and have two sons and a daughter-in-law, all either graduates or soon-to-be graduates of Indiana University.

Ann Mattson

My name is Ann Mattson and I have taught 6th grade English, Reading, and Science for 9 years at a private Catholic Pre-K-12 school in Mendota Heights, Minnesota. I became interested in Asia when my dad was in the Air Force and many of our military neighbors who had lived in Japan, Taiwan, or the Philippines raved about the beauty of the landscapes, the national respect for education, and the deep faith of the population. I can’t wait to see China – the Middle Kingdom!

I am an art specialist in Lansing School District, located in the capital city of Michigan. I have taught art for ten years. Each summer I travel to interesting places so that I can bring back to my students authentic experiences through photographs, artifacts and art production. I am honored to be included in this group of educators. Learning firsthand about Chinese culture and history is an extraordinary opportunity. My husband, a social worker, and I have two adult children, one of whom will be studying this summer in Chile.

I am a teacher and IB-MYP coordinator at Cyber Village Academy, a public charter in St. Paul, MN. I teach Global Studies and Language Arts to the best kids on the planet. I grew up in South Dakota. I used to barrel race. I enjoy spending summers on Nova Scotia’s Atlantic coast, reading, gardening, and making jewelry. I look forward to meeting everyone!

Hi! My name is Rachel Stien. I have taught for 17 years and am currently teaching 6th grade special education at Jackson Middle School in Massillon, Ohio. I enjoy reading, art, my dog, and I am slowly learning to enjoy golf. I am so excited to go on this study tour and looking forward to seeing the Terra Cotta Warriors especially.

Gregory Swynenburg

Hello! My name is Greg Swynenburg and I teach 7th grade Global Studies at Brownsburg West Middle School in Brownsburg, Indiana. I was born and raised in Lockport, Illinois which is southwest of Chicago. Following high school, I attended the University of Evansville, majoring in Education. I also had the opportunity to attend Harlaxton College in Grantham, England for a semester. In addition to teaching Global Studies, I am the freshman soccer coach at Brownsburg High School. I also advise the Brownsburg West National Junior Honor Society as well as the Academic Super Bowl team. I currently live in Danville, Indiana with my wife Apryl and daughter Olivia.
