Program Abstract: "Two years ago Jang Sun-Woo (whose films have helped make Korean cinema one of the world's most vital) decided that he's had enough of "good movies" and that it was time to make a "bad" one; this decision coincided with his encounter with a group of street-kids shown in his documentary Cinema on the Road. And this unprecedented, shattering movie is the result: a day-glo collage of scenes from the lives of Seoul street-kids, interspersed with cine-verite glimpses of a group of older winos and street-sleepers. Jang here does more than anyone since Warhol to abdicate from the director's conventional role and responsibilities. Most of the planning and scripting of individual episodes was turned over to the kids themselves, and the entire film cuts freely between footage from three cameras (35mm, 16mm, digital 8) to minimize any sense of an orderly mise-en-scene. Jang manifestly loves these kids and refuses to judge them as most Korean adults do; he expresses his own moral perspective on their chaotic lives by comparing them with the older winos. With its overlay of sardonic captions and a music track by four of Korea's hippest rock bands, Bad Movie is filmmaking at its most "out-there.""
