Program Abstract: "The life of Emperor Hirothit spans nearly the entire 20th century and covers the passage of Japan from the Middle Ages to a modern industrial state. Constructed of fascinating documentary footage, this program covers the highlights of 20th-century Japanese history, counterpointing the ritualized and ritualistic life of the Imperial family with turbulent events that were to lead Japan from tragedy in the wake of World War II to triumph. The program shows Japan's recovery, the deteremation that "we are no longer in a post-war period" and the entry of Japan into the international community.
