- Program Abstract: Describes the path which leads to a successful life in business or government in Japan and the extreme difficulty of gaining entry to that path through the only available door--a top university. Shows that the samurai ethic of loyal service still applies in modern Japanese society. An example of a "successful" man, Ken Oka of Mitsubishi, is presented and we observe the network of personal contacts to which he belongs and the importance of this network in doing business. We then look at a young man, Yuichi Nozawa, who is trying to enter a university in order to get on the so-called career escalator.
