Program Abstract: "'The face is only a layer of skin,' the man in bandages mutters. 'I've told myself that a thousand times.' Victim of an industrial accident which burns away his facial features, X retreats rather than face the world through a layer of gauze. His wife tries her best to console X, but he scorns her advances. He is so bitter that he wants to disfigure her face as well. Only that, X believes, would 'free her from her prejudice about faces.' Desperation leads X to a plastic surgeon who proposes 'an interesting experiment. It's against medical ethics, but...I'll make you a mask.' The surgeon dreams of mass producing faces that can be 'easily taken off' to create 'a world without family, friends or enemies.' Since nobody will know who anybody is, 'there will be no need for trust.' X, who no longer trusts his wife and wants to seduce her to 'prove' her disloyalty, gladly receives the face of another. Convinced that his wife will never recognize his, X approaches her as a stranger and gets her into bed. It is a moment X has dreamed of, when he will avange himself on all the so-called normal people who cause him pain. But he is in for a big surprise. Director Hiroshi Teshigahara and novelist Kobo Abe graft erotic and graphic beauty onto philosophical and psychological honor to create an alienated Frankenstein monster running amok through a strange yet familiar landscape."
