- Program Abstract:Takako, a teacher on an island in Japan’s Inland Sea returns home to Hiroshima for the first time in four years. Even amidst the signs of a resurgent postwar Hiroshima, what Takako witnesses when she visits the homes of her former students are the lingering horrors of the atomic bombing of the city. When she runs into Iwakichi, a former employee, she is struck by his desperate situation and declares her intention to take Iwakichi’s grandson with her back to the island.
On August 8, 1945 the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima resulting in over 200,000 victims. Drawing on the written accounts of children who survived the bombing, Director and writer Shindō Kaneto has created moving portrait of the surviving boys and girls—injured in body and soul--who heroically struggled on. - Data Entry Date: 8/1/2007
