Advocacy and Articulation in Japanese Language Education:
A Workshop for K-16 Teachers

In this environment of shrinking resources, it is crucial that Japanese language teachers know how to advocate successfully for their programs in their own districts and strengthen articulation within the K-16 school system. To guide our discussion of advocacy and articulation and lead us in hands-on sessions, we are pleased to welcome Ms. Maki Watanabe Isoyama (Senior Program Officer, The Japan Foundation, Los Angeles) and Prof. Motoko Tabuse (Dept. of World Languages and Honors College Faculty Associate, Eastern Michigan University).

The lecture and discussion on advocacy will address the following questions:

  • Why are advocacy skills particularly important now?
  • What kinds of advocacy activities work best?

In the hands-on session on advocacy, we will explore how to:

  • Distinguish between two types of advocacy activities—“daily” and “urgent”
  • Identify vital stakeholders and which advocacy methods work best with each stakeholder
  • Effectively use networks and group collaboration

The lecture and discussion on articulation will focus on the following:

  • Why is K-16 articulation particularly important now?
  • How can we use the AP Japanese curriculum as an opportunity for improving articulation?
  • What can we learn from examples of successful articulation activities in California, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, and other states?

In the hands-on session on articulation, we will generate an idea bank addressing:

  • Strategies for differentiating instruction, particularly in mixed-level classes
  • Effective methods for teaching Kana and AP Kanji
  • Preparation for AP and university placement exams
