Major Programs « Undergraduate Studies

A new set of EALC/EAS major requirements have been instituted for Fall 2008 and beyond. Students who enter IU during Summer/Fall 2008 and afterwards must follow these new requirements. Students who entered IU prior to Summer 2008 - regardless of when they declare the EALC/EAS major - have the option of either following the department's previous major requirements or following the new major requirements.

Major in Language and Culture

The major in language and culture is intended for students who wish to develop a solid foundation of language skills and knowledge in one of the three culture areas. This major emphasizes language training through the third-year level in one of the East Asian languages (Chinese, Japanese, or Korean). In addition to language study, EALC majors take courses on the society's culture, including in-depth study in one subject area. It is also possible to design an individualized subject area related to a student's special interests or goals, depending on course availability, in consultation with the Director of Undergraduate Studies and the departmental advisor.

Major in Language and Culture - for students who first enrolled in IU Summer/Fall 2008 or later

For Chinese and Japanese concentrations, a minimum of 31 credit hours; and for Korean concentration, a minimum of 29 credit hours in department-approved courses, including:

Three years of Chinese, Japanese, or Korean language (or the equivalent). The total major hours of 31 credits (29 for Korean) cannot include first-year language courses (i.e., C101/C102, J101/J102, K101/K102).
At least five culture courses (15 credit hours) above the 100 level:
- One class must be E200.
- Three classes must be at the 300-400 level, chosen from a single major subject area (preferably, these three courses will be on the same East Asian society as the student's language course work):
  - History/Literature/Culture; or
  - Politics/Social Science/Business
- The fifth class may be any culture course at the 200 level or above. Although it does not count towards the subject area requirement, one semester of fourth-year language may be counted in place of the fifth culture class.

Major in Language and Culture - for students who enrolled in IU prior to Summer/Fall 2008

A minimum of 25 credit hours in department-approved courses, including:

Three years of Chinese, Japanese, or Korean language (or the equivalent). The total major hours of 25 credits cannot include first-year, first-semester language courses (i.e., C101, J101, K101).
At least three culture courses (9 credit hours) above the 100 level:
- Two classes must be at the 300-400 level, chosen from a single major subject area (preferably, these two courses will be on the same East Asian society as the student's language course work):
  - Literature and Linguistics;
  - Thought, Religion, and Art; or
  - History and Society
- The third class may be any culture course at the 200 level or above. Although it does not count towards the subject area requirement, one semester of fourth-year language may be counted in place of the third culture class.

Accelerated Chinese Concentration

A minimum of 36 credit hours in department-approved courses, including:

Fourth-year, second-semester proficiency in Chinese (i.e., through the 402 level) and two semesters of C457 and/or C467. First- and second-year language courses (C101-C102 and C201-202) are not credited toward the total number of hours in the major.
At least five culture courses (15 credits) above the 100 level, including the following required courses: E200, two 300-level culture courses that accompany C457 and/or C467, and three credits of overseas study (C496). Students pursuing the Accelerated Chinese Concentration do not have to select a subject area concentration within the five culture courses.
One semester of C498 (internship; 1–6 cr.).

Note that the Accelerated Chinese Concentration requires summer and overseas study. Because students are expected to have completed the equivalent of four years of language preparation by the end of their second college year, students with no prior background in Chinese who elect this concentration will be expected to take Chinese language courses during the summers after their freshman and sophomore years. Students with no prior background who enter the program after the freshman year should anticipate similar course work during the summer and a total of more
than four years to graduate.

Major in East Asian Studies

The major in East Asian Studies includes two years of language training in one of the three East Asian languages (Chinese, Japanese, or Korean), in addition to course work in aspects of East Asian society and culture. It has been designed for students who want basic language training as well as the opportunity to study a variety of topics and approaches to the societies and cultures of East Asian countries.

Major in East Asian Studies - for students who first enrolled in IU Summer/Fall 2008 or later

A minimum of 26 credit hours in department-approved courses, including:

Two years of Chinese, Japanese, or Korean (or the equivalent). The total major hours of 26 credits cannot include first-year language courses (i.e., C101/C102, J101/J102, K101/K102).
At least six culture courses (18 credit hours) above the 100 level:
- One class must be E200.
- Culture courses must include at least two culture areas (China, Japan, Korea).
- Three of the culture courses must be at the 300-400 level, selected from the subject area courses.

Major in East Asian Studies - for students who enrolled in IU prior to Summer/Fall 2008
