Special Credit « EALC Language Programs
EALC Policy on Special Credit
In order to earn special credit in Chinese, Japanese or Korean, students must:
Take an EALC administered placement test.
- If you place into C/J/K 101 (first semester, first year), you are not eligible for special credit, regardless of your past experience in the language.
- If you place into C/J/K 102 (second semester, first year) you are eligible for 4 credits. This credit will automatically be reported to the College of Arts and Sciences Recorder’s Office. You do not need to apply for credit.
- If you place into C/J/K201 (first semester, second year) you are eligible for 8 credits. This credit will automatically be reported to the College of Arts and Sciences Recorder’s Office. You do not need to apply for credit.
- If you place into C/J/K 202 (second semester, second year) or higher, you are automatically eligible for 8 credits which will be reported to the College of Arts and Sciences Recorder’s Office.
- If you wish to receive more than 8 credits, you must successfully complete the language course you have placed into with a grade of C- or higher. Please note that the department requires that students earn a course grade of C (not C-) or above in order to register in the next course. After the grade for the validating course appears on your transcript, you will need to complete and submit an application for special credit form, available from the EALC office or online.
- If you have previously taken a C/J/K 100-200 level language course at any IU Campus and received a grade of C- or above or received transfer credit equivalency from another University for the same level you will not be eligible for special credit for that level.
If you:- Test into and complete C/J/K 202, you are eligible for 4 more credits (total 12 credits)
- Test into and complete C/J/K301 or higher, you are eligible for 8 more special credits. (total 16 credits)

Please Note:
- International students are not eligible for special credit in their native language*. English is considered to be the native language for all students who are either U.S. citizens or have graduated from a U.S. High School..
- Students who have graduated from an English-speaking high school in a country other than the U.S. are not eligible for special credit.
- Students who are U.S. permanent residents are not eligible for special credit in their native language unless they graduated from a U.S. high school.
- *If an International Student has graduated from a U.S. High School (Guam/Puerto Rico) they are eligible for special Credit.
- *If an International Student tests proficient in a language other than their native language or into a level higher than C/J/K 101 they are eligible for special credit.
- This credit applies both to graduation credit and toward majors and minors.
- EALC only awards special credit for first and second year levels for a total of 16 special credits per language. Special credit is not available for third year or higher.
- Students are eligible for special credit in multiple East Asian languages (Chinese, Japanese, and Korean) if they meet the qualifications.
- For EALC majors first enrolling at IU in 2008-09, the first and second semesters of first-year language do not count toward the major. (For continuing EALC majors who have enrolled prior to 2008-09, the second semester may be counted towards the major.)
- Special credits are reported to the recorder's office as soon as results are available. However, it may take up to 2 months for these to appear on the student AAR Report and Transcript.
- Special Credit and proficiency in a language do not appear in the "test" section of the AAR Report and Transcript but rather as Undistributed EALC Transfer Credit C/J/K (101/102/201/202) under the “other Credits” section right below the “test” section. If special credits were issued this will be indicated with 4.0.
- Please be aware that in some cases, due to the special credit restrictions listed above,students with Undistributed EALC Transfer Credit will not be eligible for special credit due to the above situations in this case 0.0 will be indicated next to the special credit in the “other credit section” of the student transcript. In this case proficiency requirements for your degree may still be full filled and you should see your academic advisor.
- Graduate students are not eligible for special credit.
- You may contact the EALC directly for your placement/proficiency test results. Please wait at least 3 business days before calling (812-856-4959) or emailing for the results to be processed and recorded in our database.
