Guidelines for Domestic Applicants to Graduate Programs - Fall 2013 Admission

Some guidelines for applying:

1. Once you have determined which program you would like to apply for, begin to prepare your application materials. 

All domestic applicants must submit:

    • Online Application for Graduate Admission
    • Statement of purpose (500 - 1000 words)
    • Academic writing sample (usually a five to ten page paper) in English
    • Three letters of recommendation
    • Official score report of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test scores
    • Complete official transcripts from ALL colleges and universities attended
    • $55 Non-refundable application fee
    • For applicants to the MA in Chinese Flagship Program Track only, Chinese essay (approximately 800 characters) The topic should revolve around a prominent, pressing global issue. How might this issue be relevant to your future profession? How might you use your Chinese language skills to meet future career challenges?

2. Complete the online application and pay the application fee. Please click here for the online application.  The following can be submitted as part of the online application:

If you would like to be considered for Associate Instructor (AI) position in EALC, please be certain to fill out the “Departmental Questions” portion of the online application.

Please note:  The “Departmental Questions” portion of the application does not allow you to save your work and return to it at a later time.  This section only will need to be completed and submitted in one session.  The rest of the online application allows you to revisit your work as much as you like before submission.

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION: Please be aware that that the recommenders that you list on your online application will not receive your recommendation request until after you submit your online application and pay the application fee. For that reason, you may want to plan to submit your online application ahead of the due date to allow your recommenders the chance to send recommendations in before the due date. You may also ask your recommenders to send hard copies of their letters directly to the department and bypass the online recommendation submission. Please contact EALC if you have questions about this.

3.   The following application materials should be submitted directly to East Asian Languages and Cultures:

    • Complete official transcripts of ALL college and university credit
    • Three letters of recommendation (only if not submitted online)

4.  When you have taken the GRE General Test, have your scores reported to IU

Scores can be reported either electronically, or in a paper format.  Scores must come directly from the testing agency.  Photocopies of your scores are not considered official and will not be accepted  by IU.

5. Supplemental Application for students who have studied internationally:

Domestic applicants (US citizens and permanent residents) who have studied at a college or university outside of the U.S. may need to complete and submit the Supplemental Application.  This form will need to be submitted along with your transcripts from any international school.

If your international study is recorded as transfer or overseas study credit on a transcript from a US college or university, this process is not necessary. However, if your overseas work is not recorded on a US transcript, then this form needs to be completed for any coursework you have done overseas, even if you did not complete a degree, and even if you only studied there for a short time.  Your file can be reviewed without the form, but you cannot be admitted to the Graduate School without this paperwork in place.
