Distinguished Professor Jeffrey D. Palmer receives 2004 Distinguished Faculty AwardThe 2004 College of Arts & Sciences Alumni Association Distinguished Faculty Award was presented to Jeffrey D. Palmer by Dean Kumble R. Subbaswamy at the Annual Recognition Banquet held on October 22, 2004 in Bloomington.
Dr. Palmer received his Ph.D. from Stanford University. He joined the faculty of IU in 1989, is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Biology, and holds the Class of 1955 Endowed Professorship. He served as chairman of the department from 1996 to 2003. Under his leadership the department grew substantially in size and stature. His academic interests in biology focus on plant evolution, molecular evolution, and genomics. He was the recipient of a Presidential Young Investigator Award from the National Science Foundation (1985-1990). He received the David Starr Jordan Prize in 1990, the Wilhelmine E. Key Award from the American Genetics Association in 1998, and a Merit Award from the Botanical Society of America in 2003. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences in 1999 and to the National Academy of Sciences in 2000. With more than 200 influential scientific papers to his credit, Dr. Palmer was named in 2002 as one of the top 15 most highly cited researchers worldwide in the field of plant and animal sciences by the Institute for Scientific Information. He is widely considered to be a world leader in evolutionary genomics. |
