Social & Historical Studies

The social sciences and history are vital areas of academic inquiry and are of central importance to a liberal arts education. Students are expected to develop historical consciousness, learn to view the present within the context of the past; appreciate tradition; and understand the critical historical forces that have influenced the way we think, feel, and act.
“Social & Historical Studies” is a general distribution requirement area for all undergraduate degree candidates in the College of Arts and Sciences, as well as in the other undergraduate units at IU.
