Distinguished Teaching Awards

Indiana University is pleased to bestow awards for distinguished teaching and service upon faculty who considered to be shining examples of dedication and excellence. Recipients are selected from more than 4,000 faculty members on all eight campuses. Distinguished Teaching Awards are presented at the Celebration of Distinguished Teaching each spring.

Frederic Bachman Lieber Memorial Award

Oldest of Indiana University’s teaching awards was established in 1954 by Mrs. Katie D. Bachman in memory of her grandson and was further endowed by Mrs. Herman Lieber.

Herman Frederic Lieber Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence

Established in 1961, this teaching award was first sponsored by the IU Foundation and is now sponsored by Mrs. Herman Lieber of Indianapolis.

The President's Award for Teaching

Established in 1974, this teaching award can be given in any division of the university and at any professorial rank.

Sylvia E. Bowman Award

Established in 1994, the Sylvia E. Bowman Award honors exemplary faculty members in areas related to American civilization. Endowed through the Indiana University Foundation, this teaching award commemorates Sylvia E. Bowman (1914-1989), a respected scholar and author who gave 34 years of service to IU as a professor, academic administrator, and chancellor for regional campus administration.

Lieber Memorial Teaching Associate Award

Established in 1961, this award has been presented each year to outstanding teachers among the university’s graduate students who combine their programs of advanced study with instructional employment in their schools and departments.

W. George Pinnell Award for Outstanding Service

This award established in 1988, recognizes faculty members and librarians who have shown exceptional breadth of involvement in service to the university, to their profession, or to the public.

John W. Ryan Award for Distinguished Contributions to International Programs and Studies

Initiated in 1991, this award honors faculty members and librarians from all campuses for exceptional contributions to the University’s international programs and studies.

Thomas Ehrlich Award for Excellence in Service Learning

This award, first conferred in 2001, honors faculty members who have shown outstanding leadership in integrating community and public service into their curricula.
