'Sour' wine proved that diseases are caused by germs. When Louis Pasteur, a chemist, was asked by a wine company why their wine turned sour while it was being made, Pasteur discovered not only that it was due to germs in the air, but also that human diseases were caused by germs. He developed a process called pasteurization, which involved killing germs by boiling wine and then cooling it down. Pasteur also went on to discover vaccinations for chicken pox, cholera, diphtheria, anthrax and rabies.
