Affirmative Action

Indiana University is an outstanding institution with a reputation for giving each student a world-class, multicultural educational experience—one that is enhanced by connections with faculty and staff with a variety of different backgrounds and viewpoints.

We are dedicated to providing equal access to our employment environment while at the same time taking affirmative action to recruit and retain outstanding faculty and staff from historically underrepresented groups, veterans, and persons with disabilities.

Search Guidelines

We believe the surest way to find the best candidate for a position is through the most inclusive applicant pool possible. To achieve this kind of pool requires using multiple search strategies and multiple forms of advertisement and announcement. The Office of Affirmative Action is available to assist in developing more inclusive recruitment plans or to provide tips in expanding the scope of a search.

Indiana University requires that all employment announcements advertised outside the university contain, at a minimum, the wording "Indiana University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer." However, we encourage the use of additional wording to further emphasize Indiana University's commitment to diversity. Examples could include:

  • "Indiana University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer committed to excellence through diversity."
  • "Indiana University has a strong commitment to principles of diversity and in that spirit seeks a broad spectrum of candidates including women, minorities, and persons with disabilities."
  • "Indiana University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer and encourages applications from candidates with diverse cultural backgrounds."

For further help on using inclusive language in a position announcement, please contact the Office of Affirmative Action.

Screen Guidelines

Indiana University policy prohibits selection criteria that may discriminate against individuals because of age, national origin, citizenship, visa status, ethnicity, race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, marital or parenthood status, childbearing or childcare plan, pregnancy, physical or mental disability, veteran status, or arrest record. It is essential that all screen criteria reflect the content of the position description and departmental needs and clearly distinguish between required and desirable qualifications.

The same areas should be covered in interview questions with all candidates, and all questions should be reviewed to ensure they are free of bias. If you have questions about the appropriateness of any interview questions, please contact the Office of Affirmative Action, (812) 855-7559.

All questions related to search and screen issues should be directed to:
