IU Head Football Coach Terry Hoeppner (center) leads the IU Bloomington football team onto the field at Memorial Stadium. IU celebrated the life of the late coach on Saturday, June 23.

Coach Terry Hoeppner

He taught us to “Defend The Rock,” that three-ton piece of Indiana limestone behind the north end zone. He created new traditions and instilled confidence, hope, and a new spirit that telegraphed itself throughout the university and to every corner of the state. He brought new excitement to Indiana football, and a renewed sense of pride and hope that went far beyond the game.

The university community grieves the loss of Coach Terry Hoeppner, who leaves a legacy that is not only set in limestone, but also in our hearts. He passed away at Bloomington Hospital Tuesday morning, June 19, following a lengthy illness.

A Celebration of Life

At the request of his family, a public “Celebration of Life” for Coach Hep was held Saturday, June 23, in Assembly Hall on the Bloomington campus.

A Remarkable Man

Coach Hoeppner’s vision for enhancing Indiana football lives on. At wife Jane Hoeppner’s request, groundbreaking ceremonies for new athletics facilities went forward June 19 despite his passing.
