Served with distinction and uncommon vision as Indiana University President

  • Created the nation’s first School of Informatics and led IU to become a leader in information technology
  • Developed the $1 million Arts and Humanities Initiative
  • Oversaw the consolidation of University Hospitals and Methodist Hospital into Clarian Healthcare
  • Increased endowment fourfold to over $1 billion, and the number of endowed faculty positions threefold to more than 360
  • Oversaw doubling of research funding to over $400 million (2001)
  • Developed the Central Indiana Life Sciences Initiative
  • Developed the university-wide Strategic Directions Initiative

Served with distinction and unprecedented focus on academic issues as NCAA President

  • Oversaw significant reform efforts on academics, student-athlete well-being, fiscal responsibility, and advocacy for college sports
  • Managed national office of more than 400 employees with an annual budget of over $45 million

Human and Scholarly Contributions

More than 50 philosophical articles and reviews, and six books including the highly influential Intending and Acting: Toward a Naturalized Action Theory (MIT Press/Bradford Books, 1984), plus more than 30 professional publications and presentations relating to higher education and college athletics.
