Welding, Cutting and Brazing
General Requirements
Only employees who have been properly trained and qualified are permitted to perform welding, cutting and brazing operations. Procedures and equipment appropriate to the job to be done shall be used.
Welding, cutting and brazing are inherently high risk– employee injury in terms of burns, eye damage, and inhalation of hazardous vapors; possibility of fires started by welding operations.

Keys to Compliance for Supervisors
- Make certain employees have proper training and experience to perform the assigned job.
- Make certain employees have all necessary Personal Protective Equipment, including welding helmets with the proper lenses installed, and flame resistant clothing.
- If a fire watch is warranted, contact Risk Management’s Fire Safety Team before beginning operations.
- Complete hot work permits and have them approved prior to beginning job.
- Make certain the area is adequately ventilated.
- Clear area of any unnecessary personnel.
- Make certain equipment including PPE is in good working condition.
